UPDATE: Katunga residents are advised that the Boil Water Notice issued by GVW will hopefully be lifted by the end of the week.
Katunga residents are advised that the Boil Water Notice issued by Goulburn Valley Water will hopefully be lifted by the end of the week.
Late last week bacteria was detected in the reticulation system at Katunga following routine sampling by GVW.
Currently, Katunga’s water supply is being provided by the Numurkah Water Treatment Plant via carting. Residents will continue to be supplied in this way until the source of contamination has been identified.
GVW operations manager Steve Nash said investigations into the cause were continuing.
‘‘Possible causes of the contamination include groundwater, bird life in the water tank or cross connection from a resident’s rainwater tank,’’ he said.
‘‘There have been previous intermittent instances of bacteria being detected in the Katunga supply over the years and the events seem to be aligned with seasonal rainfall events.
‘‘This indicates that the most likely cause of contamination is infiltration of stormwater or septic tank effluent into the ground water supply.’’
GVW is working with the Health Department, who are expected to lift the boil water notice by the weekend.
