Barooga Cricket Club’s Riley Gow is all set to play for the NSW Riverina School Sports Association in the Cricket State Championships later this year.
Riley is 12 years old and attends Barooga Public School.
‘‘I’ve been with Barooga Cricket Club for about five years,’’ he said.
‘‘I started out in the under-12s when I was seven. I play for under-14s now, but last year I had a chance to play in under-16s and also in the senior division two.’’
Riley has been selected out of more than 200 school children to make the NSW state team.
His dream is to one day play for the Australian cricket team.
He was invited to represent Barooga Public School in the initial trials for the local Riverina Schools cricket side.
Trials were held in Deniliquin where 20 children from other schools including Deniliquin, Hay, Finley and Jerilderie competed for selection to the next stage of the 2013 Riverina PSSA Cricket Team.
Riley was selected along with 11 other boys to move onto the next stage.
The next stage of the selection process was held at Deniliquin in March, but included not only the 12 from the local area, but also about 200 other school children from the Southern Riverina area.
Out of these, Riley was selected along with 21 others.
This was a proud moment for Riley and his mother Donna, along with his grandfather Terry Gow who attended all his games.
Riley travelled to Wagga Wagga as a requirement for training with the 21 other squad members on two occasions before the final selection was made.
Although not compulsory, Riley wanted to keep his cricket skills improving and enrolled in the Academy’s Winter Training Program taken by Max Shepherd whose background is working with Cricket NSW as state director of coaching.
This further training Riley undertook helped improve his game but also proved his dedication to wanting to be selected to represent the Riverina PSSA.
The final selection trials were held at the Barooga Recreation Reserve on October 8.
Here the 22 boys played a 50-over match which the selectors watched and made a final decision for the 12 players who would ultimately represent the Riverina PSSA at the four-day State Championships to be held in Bathurst starting on Monday, November 4.
Riley was picked as a bowler for the squad of 12 to play in Bathurst.
After competing in Bathurst, boys from the NSW cricket sides will be selected to represent NSW to compete against all the other states.
