Comb-over Carol was clearly in distress when Shifty Shirley and Afro Jack were stolen from their home at Benalla P-12 College last month.
Thieves broke into the Faithfull St campus two weeks ago and stole the chicken and mop top Bantam rooster that were part of a Year 9 student program.
Benalla P-12 College teacher Philip Hunter discovered the theft when he and a student went to feed them the chickens on Wednesday, August 28.
Mr Hunter said the chickens were in a pen made out of chicken wire, which had been cut open.
He said the thief took one of the chickens and the rooster.
‘‘I thought the worst. I checked the bins; I thought they might have butchered them and left them there, so I checked all around and the vegie garden area — but I only found a couple of feathers.’’
Mr Hunter filed a police report, but said he did not expect the chickens to be returned to the school.
The chickens were part of the innovative Year 9 ‘advisory’ program that launched at Benalla P-12 College this year.
The program involves all Year 9 students and combines humanities and science studies into an alternative learning program.
‘‘The idea is that they immerse themselves .
The program also involves ‘masterclasses’ to cover the core curriculum, with a recent focus on sustainability.
‘‘A couple of the ideas the students got from that unit was growing your own fruit and veg and having chickens because they reduce your waste and turn your waste into really good compost, and also laying the eggs,’’ Mr Hunter said.
This prompted a group of about 10 students to revive an old vegetable garden and source two donated chickens and one rooster for the school.
Mr Hunter said the ‘advisory’ program was already giving students greater insight into career options in their areas of interest.
‘‘I believe they’re getting more of a clearer idea of areas they may want to go after they finish school,’’ he said.
‘‘I certainly think students are interested and engaged with the science .
‘‘I think we have a really good relationship with the students .
Mr Hunter said the data was already showing that students were not being removed from the ‘advisory’ classes, and that attendance was very strong as students were more engaged in their learning.
