The community is encouraged to join or donate to the Light the Night fundraiser, with money going to the Leukaemia Foundation.By Kaitlin Thals
Kate Leith is calling on the community to join her in lighting up the streets of Benalla.
Ms Leith, 34, will host Light The Night this month — a twilight walk held by the Leukaemia Foundation to raise funds for leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma research.
She said the community had already thrown its support behind the event, offering donations and raffle prizes for the night.
‘‘I am blown away by people’s generosity and also their concern for my health,’’ Ms Leith said.
‘‘To date we have raised $3000 and still have about three weeks until the event. This sort of support gives me strength to keep on fighting.’’
Ms Leith is battling a rare form of incurable leukaemia. She learned of her diagnosis just months after giving birth to her second son, Noah, in October 2010.
‘‘Each day can be a struggle with tiredness, pain and also sickness but I fight because I have a strong will to live and want to see a cure for this cancer,’’ Ms Leith said.
‘‘When I was first diagnosed, I was given two years to live — it has now been 26 months and I am still here, fighting with everything in me.
‘‘This event is very important to me and also other blood cancer sufferers in the town, and that is why I am trying my absolute best to get the best outcome for not only myself but for the town too. The more we raise, the closer we could be to finding a cure.’’
Raffle prizes include: two nights’ accommodation in Bendigo donated by Calder Family Motel, valued at $200; a whole lamb, cut, donated by Wilkinson White Dorpers, valued at $180; a De Lorenzo Hair hamper donated by Glamour Hairdressing, valued at $180; a meal voucher donated by The Commercial Hotel, valued at $100; plus many more prizes.
Raffle tickets cost $2 each or three for $5. Tickets can be purchased from the Bendigo Bank, Benalla Party Hire and Glamour Hairdressing and will be available on the night. The raffle will be drawn during the evening.
There will be a barbecue fundraiser at Mitre 10 Benalla, 45 Sydney Rd, on Saturday from 9
Ms Leith will host her Light the Night event on Saturday, September 21 at the Botanical Gardens rotunda from 5
