Outfits off to Canberra
Three vintage outfits from a Benalla collection will be displayed at Canberra's centennial celebrations.
Benalla and District Historical Society has lent three vintage outfits to the National Capital Authority to be displayed as part of Canberra’s upcoming centennial celebrations.
The outfits will feature in the exhibition A Capital Collection, which is made up of four brief individual exhibitions.
Running for about nine weeks each, the four exhibitions will each showcase a significant event in Canberra’s history.
The first is of the 1913 naming of Canberra; the second is of the Duke and Duchess of York’s visit to Canberra in 1927 to open the first Parliament House; the third is of Lake Burley Griffin’s inauguration in 1964; and the fourth is of the opening of the permanent Parliament House in 1988.
The historical society was asked to lend a pale pink woollen dress to the 1927 exhibition, a pink dress coat to be potentially used in the 1964 exhibition, and a blue Acton suit for the 1988 exhibition.
Roslyn Hall, education and outreach officer for the National Capital Authority, said the history of fashion was fascinating for men and women, and Benalla’s contribution allowed the authority to connect with more local museums.
‘‘Benalla is one of the best regional museums in Australia,’’ she said.
A Capital Collection will be held at Regatta Point, Canberra, from March 6 to December 16.
