The Benalla Gardens Oval grandstand is back to its former glory thanks largely to the initiative of a local 16-year-old.
EdSpace student Codi Kego instigated the refurbishment of the grandstand — which was officially opened on Friday — after feeling unsafe using the facilities when they were damaged by floods in 2010.
‘‘One day I went down to the gardens to play football and I looked at the roof and it just felt like it was going to collapse, and the change rooms looked absolutely terrible and I didn’t feel comfortable going to the toilet either because I thought the roof was going to collapse,’’ Codi said.
He wrote a letter to Member for Benalla Bill Sykes and the Benalla Ensign in June 2011, seeking repairs to the damage caused by torrential rainfall and inundation to the grandstand during the September and December 2010 floods.
