Murray cod fingerlings released into Benalla's Broken River

Five thousand fingerling Murray cod will find new homes in the Broken River as the lake refills at Benalla.

Five-thousand fingerling Murray cod were last week released into the Broken River above Lake Benalla and will soon hopefully find new homes as the lake refills in the coming months.

The Tatong Anglers Group applied to DPI Fisheries for a stocking of Murray cod to Lake Benalla back in 2008 and the application was approved in 2009.

Unfortunately, because of the autumn drawdowns of Lake Benalla to control Cabomba weed, the fish stockings haven’t been possible to this point in time.

It will be quite some time before these fish are of catchable size, but they will hopefully form the nucleus of a sustainable population in Lake Benalla for the future.
