After nine years of recycling D&R Henderson sawmill has diverted 90 000 of post-consumer wood waste from landfill.By Robyn Antanovskii
D&R Henderson sawmill is celebrating an environmentally friendly milestone after recycling many tonnes of scrap timber.
The company’s recycling operations, which began in 2004, have since diverted 90
‘‘It’s a big milestone,’’ executive director David Henderson said.
‘‘The timber comes from old pallets, crates and furniture offcuts, and is turned into particle board.’’
More than two-thirds of the recycled timber has been processed during the past three years, owing to the installation of a specialised cleaning tower in 2010.
‘‘The cleaning tower has facilitated recycling of large-scale volumes of wood waste,’’ Mr Henderson said.
Using recycled timber results in a large reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, as it keeps the wood out of landfill and it requires less energy to process dry wood than fresh wood.
The timber scraps are shredded into chips, then run through the cleaning tower, where an airgrading process removes any contaminants.
The finished product is used in kitchen cabinets, door cores and flooring for the construction industry.
‘‘We expect to now recycle between 20
‘‘This is a great thing both for the environment and for the business.’’
D&R Henderson owns 15 per cent of the market share of particle board in Australia.
