Gliding to glory
The Gliding Club of Victoria has won its bid to host the 2016 World Gliding Championships at Benalla.
By Angela TownsendBenalla will receive a massive tourism boost after the Gliding Club of Victoria’s (GCV) announcement it has won the bid to host the 2016 World Gliding Championships.
With the event itself to be held in January 2017 due to premium gliding conditions, this will mark 30 years since the club first hosted the championships in 1987.
GCV world championships co-ordinator John Switala said the biennual event was expected to attract large numbers of people from around the world, at great benefit to not only Benalla but the entire region.
While Mr Switala was preparing to attend his daughter’s wedding in Adelaide last weekend, a group of excited members gathered at the gliding club headquarters to await the announcement from Copenhagen, Denmark. GCV representative Terry Cubley was on the other side of the world for the live announcement, making the call to Benalla at 1
‘‘There were a lot of guys in the clubhouse — quite a bit of excitement,’’ Mr Switala said.
When it comes to the competition itself, Mr Switala said it was always an advantage to ‘‘play on home ground’’.
GCV member Tobi Geiger will no doubt be planning a win on home thermals after finishing with an impressive second placing at the World Gliding Championships in Argentina earlier this year.
