New Member for Indi Cathy McGowan has received $68
Ms McGowan’s cheque was received as part of the Australian Electoral Commission’s distribution of $56.3

Ms McGowan said the money would be used to eliminate debt incurred during her campaign, and to fund her campaign in the next election.
‘‘We knew it was coming but we didn’t know how much, so some of that will be used in funding the campaign and the rest of it will be banked for the next election to give us a bit of a start on that,’’ she said.
‘‘I’m very grateful to the taxpayers of Australia for funding it. It enables community groups like us to do it. It would have been very hard to totally rely on our own funding.’’
The payment is based on nearly $2.50 per vote, and Ms McGowan was the only Indi candidate to receive a payment. Others candidates either did not receive enough votes, or their party nationally received a lump sum.
Life has been busy for Ms McGowan and her volunteers since the September election, with her Wangaratta office officially opened on Monday.
‘‘It’s a really big job getting the office going and setting your systems in place,’’ Ms McGowan said.
‘‘We want to run the office very professionally.’’
However the opening was low-key, with Ms McGowan in Canberra for an induction for newly elected MPs.
‘‘I’m really looking forward to the other bit, which is Canberra, and getting out around the community. I’ve received lots and lots of invitations, which is far too many for me to pick up now, but in the next couple of years I’m really looking forward to getting to all the different communities and attending functions,’’ Ms McGowan said.
