A driver escaped injury after his vehicle caught fire on Hume Fwy.By Monique Freer
A driver was lucky to escape injury on Friday night after his car went up in flames on Hume Fwy.
Benalla police Sergeant Harry Verbaken said a motorist made the driver aware that sparks were coming from his vehicle around 10.30
The driver pulled over and exited the vehicle just north of the Benalla northern exit before it caught fire.
The driver was uninjured, however the car was destroyed.
Benalla CFA lieutenant Charlie Sexton said due to the large amount of leaking fuel it took a considerable amount of time to contain the blaze.
Benalla CFA, Winton CFA, Euroa police, Benalla police and Benalla Highway Patrol attended the scene, and one lane on Hume Fwy was closed for two hours while the fire was contained.
Sgt Verbaken said if motorists witnessed something dangerous it was safer to try and alert the driver.
‘‘I think most people if they see something dangerous, try and alert the driver to get them to stop as quick as they can,’’ Sgt Verbaken said.
Sgt Verbaken said the cause of the fire was mechanical and non-suspicious.
