Benalla State Emergency Service volunteers were recognised for 45 years’ combined service at a recent awards ceremony.
Brendon (Brett) Taylor-Parkins and Colin Croxford were recognised for 10 years and 35 years long service respectively, at the Victoria SES north-east region inaugural awards ceremony on Saturday, August 17.
Benalla SES’s deputy controller Mr Taylor-Parkins said it was a privilege to receive his service medal.
‘‘It’s an absolute honour — it was inevitable but it was service to the community rather than anything,’’ he said.
‘‘I enjoy the people, the work for the community, the satisfaction of a job well done .
Benalla SES’s unit controller Mr Croxford said he enjoyed the challenges of his role with SES.
‘‘I’m pretty happy that I’ve lasted that long in SES,’’ Mr Croxford said.
‘‘After 35 years you have a fair investment in the community and the service, and the knowledge that you’ve had.’’
Acting SES north-east regional manager Neil Payn thanked all SES volunteers for their commitment to road rescues, land searches, flood and storm events, and their support of the fire services and interstate colleagues, notably during the Queensland floods of 2010 to 2011.
‘‘We would like to take the time to recognise our volunteers, as they have all demonstrated why SES volunteers are so highly valued and respected in our communities,’’ Mr Payn said.
‘‘I would like to congratulate the 2013 recipients, along with all SES volunteers around the state, for their invaluable contribution to enhancing the safety of north-east Victorians.
‘‘Award recipients have each demonstrated outstanding commitment and dedicated countless hours to serving their local communities.’’
Queensland flood citation and national emergency medals —for service during the 2009 Victorian bushfires — were also awarded at the ceremony.
Victoria SES is the state’s response agency for flood, storm, earthquake and tsunami emergencies. SES volunteers perform a wide variety of tasks, including cutting up trees felled by storms, sandbagging homes to protect from floods, and rescuing people who have been stranded, lost or injured.
