Benalla pair celebrates golden anniversary
Margaret and Wal Pfeiffer celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on March 16.
By Monique FreerIn the midst of preparations for their youngest daughter’s wedding, Margaret and Wal Pfeiffer will take time to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on Saturday.
The pair met at a dance at Hawthorn Town Hall before marrying in 1963 at St Peters Anglican Church in Box Hill.
‘‘It was a beautiful day, lovely weather,’’ Mrs Pfeiffer said.
Their reception was at Mirama Court in Mitcham, a beautiful reception building that has since burnt down.
Their first daughter Sharon was born a year into their marriage, and after realising that Wal’s work demands were restricting his time with his new daughter, the family chose to relocate to Benalla.
‘‘We needed to move between the two lots of parents,’’ Mrs Pfeiffer said.
They moved to Benalla in January 1965, and expanded their family with children Warren and Nicole.
Although the couple thought they would remain in Benalla for only five years, 48 years later they are Benalla locals.
Mr and Mrs Pfeiffer have four grandsons and two granddaughters, who will all join the family and their close friends to celebrate the golden milestone at Kim Wah on Saturday.
The celebrations will continue two weeks later at their daughter Nicole’s wedding. Mrs Pfeiffer, a former dressmaker, is putting the finishing touches on Nicole’s wedding dress, as she did for her own wedding dress and that of her daughter and daughter-in-law.
Mr Pfeiffer said the key to their successful marriage was the wise words of their grandparents.
‘‘Don’t let the sun go down on an argument,’’ Mr Pfeiffer said.
‘‘And always meet each other half way,’’ Mrs Pfeiffer said.
