For the first time in its history the Benalla Festival is heading out to Swanpool to embrace its 'We Are One' theme.
Swanpool village and the Swanpool Community Cinema will be hot-spots for locals and visitors during the Melbourne Cup weekend for the opening events of the 2013 festival.
Benalla Festival organising committee chair Councillor Suzy Martin said these first events would set the tone perfectly for this year’s festival theme.
‘‘The theme celebrates the historic and present-day multiculturalism and diversity of the rural city,’’ Cr Martin said.
‘‘Our whole community is enriched by our past and present migrants, and everyone who has made this their home.
‘‘This is the first initiative from a rural town to join in the Benalla Festival, and it is our aim to see more rural towns bring a local event to the festival.
‘‘Swanpool are to be congratulated for yet another significant initiative following on from the Bald Archy. This will bring them another big step closer to their aim to be recognised as the gateway to Benalla.’’
The weekend starts on Friday, November 1 with a local filmmakers’ special. Swanpool Community Cinema spokesperson Michael Vanderzee said the event would begin with two films directed by former Benalla locals.
‘‘The feature documentary Mongolian Bling, by former Violet Town local Benj Binks, is a fascinating look inside Mongolia’s hip-hop community. Benj will also be on hand to discuss the film,’’ Mr Vanderzee said.
‘‘The second film, Little Ripper — Fast, Feathered and Fearless, is a feature-length Australian documentary by award-winning brothers Craig and Jarrod Boord, which captures the heart and soul of the dying sport of pigeon racing.’’
Members of Benalla’s Indian community have worked closely with the cinema to present Bush Bollywood at Swanpool on Saturday, November 2, an exciting program of the globally popular Bollywood films, Indian food and culture to share with people from Benalla and district communities.
On Sunday, community members are invited to a free event in the Swanpool Community Cinema grounds to celebrate Diwali – Festival of Light with members of the Benalla Indian community.
