People in the Shepparton and Seymour regions are being warned a thunderstorm could bring large hailstones, heavy rain, flash flooding and damaging winds this afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of the north central and northern country forecast districts.

Bureau forecaster Gina Lawrie said Deniliquin and Finley were likely experiencing rainfall now, with the storm cell expected to move across Echuca and head south.

She said there was a chance of storms throughout the afternoon and into the early evening.

The State Emergency Service advises people should:

  • Keep clear of fallen power lines.
  • Secure any loose objects near homes.
  • Keep away from creeks and drains.
  • Do not drive vehicles through flooded areas.
  • Stay indoors if possible.
  • Avoid using the phone during the storm.
  • Avoid sheltering under trees.
  • Listen to the radio for storm updates.
  • Switch off your computer and electrical appliances.

If you're affected by the storm, send your photos to online@mmg.com.au
