Book-lovers delight as year of reading begins
Goulburn and Murray valley libraries will be celebrating books and the joy of reading this year as the National Year of Reading begins.

The year-long campaign was officially launched last week and aims to encourage children to learn to read and keen readers to find new sources of inspiration.
According to the National Year of Reading group, nearly half the population struggles without literacy skills to meet the most basic demands of everyday life and work.
The National Year of Reading joins public libraries, community groups, governments and businesses to undertake Australia-wide programs, including putting the spotlight on Indigenous literacy, a competition for teenagers to encourage friends to read their favourite books, as well as monthly themes.
Several projects are planned and the annual Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, which requires students to read a set number of books throughout the year, is also running.
Events are running across the Goulburn and Murray valleys
- The Goulburn Valley Regional Library Corporation is running a year-long competition to get people to send pictures of people caught in the act of reading.
- The library corporation includes Moira, Mitchell, Strathbogie and Greater Shepparton councils – details of monthly programs are on the GVLRC website.
- The Campaspe Shire has activities across its libraries as well as a book review competition – check out the council website for more details.
